Tribal Development in Erstwhile Andhra Pradesh: A Historical Study of Socio-Economic Life

Abstract

This study examines tribal development in erstwhile Andhra Pradesh from a historical and socio-economic perspective, focusing on the effectiveness of state-led interventions in improving tribal livelihoods. The analysis is based on secondary sources, including government policy documents, Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP) reports, Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) records, and published academic literature.

The findings indicate that, despite the expansion of institutional frameworks and protective legislations, the outcomes of development initiatives have been uneven. Significant gaps persist in land rights protection, literacy, healthcare access, and sustainable livelihood opportunities. These challenges are attributed to structural constraints, administrative inefficiencies, and implementation deficits.

The study highlights a divergence between policy intent and ground-level realities, suggesting that tribal development in the region reflects a mixed trajectory of progress and persistent marginalization. It emphasizes the need for context-specific, participatory, and implementation-focused strategies to ensure inclusive and sustainable development among tribal communities.
