The theatre director occupies a crucial position in transforming dramatic literature into a coherent theatrical event. This article examines directorial dynamics and their contribution to the realisation of Total Theatre in Esiaba Irobi’s Hangmen Also Die. Drawing from a qualitative and practice-led experimental study, the article investigates how directorial interpretation, rehearsal processes, interdisciplinary collaboration, movement, music, ritual, costume, lighting, sound, spectacle and audience interaction were integrated in the staging of the play. The study demonstrates that the director's role extends beyond the interpretation of dialogue to include the coordination and synthesis of diverse performance languages. The experimental production revealed that the political and ritual dimensions of Irobi's dramaturgy require an integrated directorial approach in which acting, choreography, music, design and technical elements function as mutually reinforcing components. The article argues that directorial dynamics constitute the principal mechanism through which the principles of Total Theatre are translated from theoretical concepts into embodied performance. It concludes that innovative directing can revitalise African dramatic texts, strengthen audience engagement and expand the expressive possibilities of contemporary Nigerian theatre.
