Strengthening Occupational Health and Safety: Panacea for Enhancing Employee Job Performance in the Oil and Gas Industry in Nigeria

Abstract

Occupational health and safety remain a critical but persistently neglected determinant of employee job performance in Nigeria's oil and gas industry, where workplace hazards, regulatory gaps, and poor OHS compliance collectively suppress workforce productivity in the country's most economically significant industrial sector. This paper systematically examined how strengthening four key OHS dimensions, namely personal protective equipment, safety training and education, health monitoring and medical surveillance, and workplace safety policies and procedures, can enhance employee job performance in Nigeria's oil and gas industry. Drawing on a systematic literature review of 15 carefully selected peer-reviewed studies sourced from Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science out of an initial pool of 43,216 identified records, the paper adopted the Job Demands-Resources Theory as its analytical framework. Findings confirm that PPE availability, structured safety training, regular health surveillance, and strong safety policy environments all independently and collectively improve employee job performance, with workplace safety policies emerging as the most structurally foundational OHS dimension. Millions of workers die annually from occupational causes globally, while Nigerian oil and gas operations continue to record alarmingly low OHS compliance rates that urgently demand institutional attention and policy reform. The paper recommends among others that, oil and industries in Nigeria and regulatory authorities should strengthen PPE availability, enforcement, and compliance monitoring across all operational levels, ensuring that every worker has consistent access to appropriate protective gear and that non-compliance attracts meaningful institutional consequences that genuinely deter unsafe workplace behaviour.
