Artificial Intelligence (AI) is dramatically changing organizational environments. It is changing how we think about how leaders make decisions. This article will examine the effects of AI on modern organization's leader decision-making behaviors and how they incorporate AI generated insights into their strategic, operational, and ethical decision-making. We will draw on theories such as Bounded Rationality Theory, Strategic Leadership Theory, and Sociotechnical System Theory to conceptually investigate the evolving role of the leader in an environment characterized by growing numbers of algorithmic outputs and increasing amounts of data.
Our results indicate that AI increases the speed of decision-making, increases the accuracy of predictions based on available data, and provides immediate access to large amounts of information. At the same time, AI creates several challenges for decision-makers. One challenge includes becoming too reliant on the output generated by algorithms. Another challenge relates to increased ambiguity regarding ethical responsibilities. Finally, there is the decreased ability to apply judgment when using AI generated data. Thus, leaders must find ways to effectively manage the trade-off between being able to efficiently utilize large amounts of data and being able to apply contextual, ethical, and strategic reasoning.
Additionally, organizations that do not have clearly defined governance structures, run the risk of having inconsistent or poorly aligned decision-making practices. In conclusion, our study demonstrates the value of strategic leadership in facilitating successful AI integration within an organization. Our study suggests that organizations need to create clearly stated policies, established standards for ethics and morality, and need to be organized around a common set of values. Furthermore, our study indicates that successful leaders will not only use AI as a support mechanism in their decision-making processes but will also help to create the organizational climate in which AI can be successfully applied.
