Abstract

This study examines the effect of training and development on members' performance among cooperatives in Enugu State. Specifically, it investigates how various dimensions of training namely, types of training programs provided, frequency of training sessions, participation rate of members, quality and relevance of training materials, and trainers' expertise impact the output of cooperative members. Using a structured questionnaire, data were collected from a sample of 275 cooperative members across the area. The empirical analysis employed the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression technique to determine the relationship between the independent variables (training program types, training frequency, participation rate, training quality, and trainers’ expertise) and the dependent variable, members’ performance. The regression results reveal that the types of training programs provided positively influence members' performance, with a coefficient of 0.238 (p<0.01), indicating that diversified training enhances productivity and skills. The frequency of training sessions also shows a significant positive effect, with a coefficient of 0.145 (p<0.05), suggesting that regular training sustains member engagement and skill acquisition. Participation rate exerts a strong positive impact, with a coefficient of 0.312 (p<0.001), emphasizing the importance of member involvement in training activities. The quality and relevance of training materials have a significant positive effect, with a coefficient of 0.198 (p<0.01), underscoring the value of pertinent training content. Additionally, trainers' expertise is highly significant, with a coefficient of 0.271 (p<0.001), demonstrating that skilled trainers markedly improve member performance. The findings indicate that targeted and high-quality training programs substantially enhance members' productivity and the overall performance of cooperatives. Based on these results, it is recommended that cooperatives prioritize diversifying training content, increase the frequency of training sessions, encourage higher member participation, and engage qualified trainers to maximize performance outcomes. Policymakers and cooperative managers should also invest in developing relevant training materials and fostering an environment conducive to continuous learning, thereby boosting cooperative productivity and sustainability in Enugu State.
