Abstract

Global inequalities, characterized by disparities in income, access to resources, and development opportunities, remain a pressing challenge despite decades of international efforts. International Financial Institutions (IFIs), including the IMF, World Bank, and WTO, have played a pivotal role in addressing these disparities through financial aid, policy interventions, and capacity-building initiatives. However, their impact has been a subject of significant debate, with some arguing that IFIs have exacerbated inequalities through structural adjustment programs and inequitable governance structures. This paper critically examines the historical evolution, mechanisms, and impact of IFIs in mitigating global inequalities, with a focus on both their successes and shortcomings. Drawing on case studies and policy analysis, the study identifies structural challenges such as governance imbalances and the misalignment of global and local priorities. The paper concludes by proposing reforms to enhance IFIs’ capacity to promote sustainable and inclusive development in the face of emerging global challenges.
