Abstract

Purpose - This study examines the relationship between limestone resources, cement-industry expansion and employment generation in Chittorgarh district of Rajasthan.

Rationale - The district possesses extensive deposits of cement-grade and non-cement-grade limestone distributed across several limestone belts, which have provided a significant resource base for the development of a major cement-manufacturing cluster.

Sources of data & Methodology- Primary data were collected through field surveys of major cement plants, while secondary information was obtained from cement companies, the Indian Bureau of Mines, the Office of Labour Enforcement Officer (Central), Bhilwara and other official sources.

Result - The findings indicate a strong association between captive limestone resources and the establishment and expansion of cement manufacturing units. The combined manpower of selected cement industries increased to an overall growth of 39.66%. The study further indicates substantial future employment potential due to the long-term availability of cement-grade limestone resources and continued industrial expansion. However, a pledge of Vikshit Bharat 2047 is likely to enhance the demand of Cement for infrastructural growth and skilled and technically qualified manpower. The study summarizes that sustainable utilization of limestone resources, responsible mining and skill development can strengthen long-term employment potential in Chittorgarh district.
