Abstract

The start-up ecosystem in India has undergone significant transformation over the past decade, driven by policy reforms, digital innovation, and increasing entrepreneurial activity. This paper examines the evolution of the start-up ecosystem in India with special reference to emerging opportunities, structural challenges, and policy support mechanisms. The primary objective is to analyze the development trajectory of start-ups, identify key constraints affecting their sustainability, and evaluate the effectiveness of government initiatives in fostering entrepreneurial growth. The study is based entirely on secondary data obtained from government reports, policy documents, and international organizations, including DPIIT, NITI Aayog, World Bank, and OECD. A descriptive and thematic analysis approach has been adopted for data interpretation. The findings reveal that India offers substantial opportunities due to a large consumer market, rapid digital transformation, and supportive policy frameworks. However, start-ups continue to face challenges such as inadequate access to finance, regulatory complexities, talent shortages, and scalability constraints. The study concludes that a more integrated ecosystem involving coordinated policy support, financial accessibility, and innovation infrastructure is essential for sustainable start-up development in India.
