India’s Foreign Policy and International Relations: An Analytical Study of India’s Diplomatic Engagements in the 21st Century

Abstract

India's foreign policy has evolved significantly since its independence in 1947, transitioning from a non-aligned stance during the Cold War to a dynamic and multi-aligned approach in the 21st century. As a rising global power, India strategically engages in international relations by balancing economic aspirations, security imperatives, and geopolitical interests. This paper critically examines the historical trajectory of India’s foreign policy and its evolving engagement with major global powers and regional organisations. India's role in multilateral institutions such as the United Nations (UN), BRICS, QUAD, G20, and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) underscores its active participation in global governance. This study also explores India’s bilateral and regional partnerships, particularly with nations such as the United States, Russia, China, the European Union, and South Asian neighbours, including Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. Additionally, India's economic diplomacy, trade agreements, investment policies, and strategic connectivity projects are analysed to understand their impact on international relations. This research further delves into India’s defence and security partnerships, evaluating its military modernisation efforts and strategic dialogues such as QUAD and Indo-Pacific strategies. Challenges such as border tensions, maritime security concerns, and evolving defence collaborations are assessed to illustrate India’s strategic recalibrations. Moreover, India’s climate diplomacy and its commitment to sustainability initiatives, including the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and COP summits, are explored to assess its role in global sustainability efforts. As India continues to expand its influence in global governance, it faces significant challenges, including shifting geopolitical alliances, trade disputes, energy security concerns, and technological advancements.

This study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of India's foreign policy by identifying key patterns, emerging trends, and policy challenges. By critically analysing India’s diplomatic engagements, security strategies, and economic initiatives, this research highlights the country’s growing role in international relations and its trajectory in shaping the global order.
