India and Asian Geopolitics: Strategic Interests, Challenges, and Opportunities

Abstract

India, as one of the fastest-growing economies and a major regional power, plays a crucial role in shaping the geopolitical landscape of Asia. Given its strategic location, military strength, and expanding global influence, India’s foreign policy is designed to maintain regional stability while advancing its national interests. This paper explores India's geopolitical engagements, focusing on its relationships with key regional actors, including China, Pakistan, ASEAN, and the United States. It analyzes the complexities of India's foreign policy in managing territorial disputes, economic collaborations, and strategic alliances.

A significant aspect of India’s geopolitical approach involves balancing its competition and cooperation with China. While both nations engage in extensive trade, border disputes along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) continue to fuel tensions. Similarly, India’s long-standing rivalry with Pakistan, particularly concerning Kashmir and cross-border terrorism, remains a persistent challenge to regional stability. In contrast, India’s deepening relations with ASEAN countries through its Act East Policy highlight its commitment to regional economic integration and security cooperation. Moreover, India’s engagement with the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QUAD) alongside the United States, Japan, and Australia reflects its growing emphasis on Indo-Pacific security dynamics.

India’s role in multilateral organizations, such as BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and the G20, further strengthens its global standing. Additionally, maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) is a key strategic priority for India, given its dependence on sea routes for trade and energy security. This paper examines how India navigates emerging geopolitical challenges, adapts to shifting alliances, and reinforces its influence in Asian geopolitics. By analyzing India’s diplomatic strategies, defense policies, and trade initiatives, this study provides insights into the country’s evolving role as a dominant power in the Asian geopolitical framework.
